Tangs To Open at The Pavilion This Year

After its Starhill Store closure four years ago, Singapore's iconic retail institution C.K Tang or Tangs is making a grand comeback with the opening of its new store at KL's upcoming prestigious retail address, The Pavilion. The Malaysian store, is a part of the company's expansion as the Singapore-based retailer is keen to make its presence outside of the Lion City.

“It is still too premature to conclude anything at this stage, but there has been much interest in having Tangs stores overseas,” chief executive officer Foo Tiang Sooi said to English daily The Star, when announcing the opening of a new Tangs store here yesterday.

The new store will feature a new concept designed to cater the needs of discerning Malaysian shoppers with a gargantuan floorspace of 65 000 sq ft and a sum of RM 30 000 000 is allocated for the working capital, store renovation and merchandising.

“We don't see any slowdown, judging from the traffic to malls and restaurants, but we are cautiously bullish about the prospects. Tangs at the Pavilion will be in a good location, so we hope there will be an advantage,” he said when asked on Malaysian consumer spending trend.

In Singapore, C.K. Tang recently opened its second store at the country's largest shopping and lifestyle mall, VivoCity.

Before, the company gave its flagship store at the Orchard Road, which has stood long for the last 75 years, a new makeover, as a part of the six-figure rebranding exercise which includes the incorporation of new logo. With new retailing concepts that enables customers to experiment with such as Tang + Co., the Playlab and ScentBar just to name a few.

“We hope that Tangs in Malaysia will contribute to 10% of group revenue for our financial year ending March 31, 2008,” Foo added.

The new Tangs store is scheduled to open within the third quarter of the year, along with other prestigious retailers at the sleek KL Pavilion.
