Art School Chic by H&M

The “art on fashion” trend may not be gone forever but at H&M, there’s a new trend coming up this fall/winter. That trend is known as the “art student chic” trend.

To understand the trend more profoundly, one can look into the styles sported by the students of Saint Martins Central, which is one of the most sought-after and popular art schools in the world.

Even better, recall back the last few falls/ winters when Mary-Kate Olsen sported her drabby boho chic look while studying for her Art degree at the New York University.

But thank God, unlike the Olsen’s shabby, drabby, whatever that ends with –y bohemian chic, H&M’s interpretation of art student chic is more subtle and far sophisticated.

For starters, one can expect to balanced proportions with lots of emphasize on clean lines. Fashion influences from the past or timeless shapes too are heavily incorporated in the new fall/winter collection to make it on par with other high-end or high street labels in the market.

For women’s collection, a variety of cheerful and sober colours such as pale green, bright Christmas red, grey, turquoise and brown were combined together to create an exciting fall/winter palette.

With every piece made to wear at all occasions regardless of time, there are a plenty to choose from. For instance, a funnel neck top with buttoned side and long-sleeves paired with grey high-waisted pencil skirt looks terrific for work or attending classes.

If you think the first ensemble does not catch all the attention that you want, then why not turn to a second or third option like this one – short-sleeved leather top in brown worn over body-hugging body sock in black with long sleeves and paired with a amazing flouncy turquoise ball skirt? Not only it does spell dramatic but also as an art student, isn’t expressing yourself through what you wear should be a part of your exciting curriculum?

But in comparison between the women’s and the men’s collection, the male ones ideally embodies the true spirit of an art student bohemian and devil-may-care attitude.

In the menswear section, one of the fall/winter staple an art student with strong inclination on Raphael and Pollock is the cardigan. Although you may see cardigans as something last season and so grandpa-looking, fret not because the colour purple makes it fresh and contemporary.

Planning to go out and hang out with friends at the Tate Modern Art Museum? Then, beat the wintry chill with this cool yet artistic ensemble to boot – monochrome stripe sweater, a skinny trousers with flapped pockets at the back, a pair of buttery soft leather gloves to warm those hands, and not to forget, an oversized knit scarf slithering around the neck in classic black. Last not least, stuff your little life essentials inside the patent leather tote.

H&M fall/winter 2008 collection for him and her will be available at all H&M stores worldwide next month.
