The Touch of Nanette Lepore

On the recent cover of Malaysian edition of Cosmopolitan, cover girl Hillary Duff was wearing a Nanette Lepore dress. Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City fame, Million Dollar Baby Hillary Swank and Eva Longoria have been spotted in Lepore's ultra-chic pieces. So what is so special about her anyway? At the tender age of nine, the Ohio-born Lepore had already displayed her skill in creating couture pieces by befitting a neighbour in floral bedspread, beaded choker and face painted. According to her official bio from her web site, Nanette had the girl posed in front of her family yard behind a hand-lettered sign declaring Lepore. And it was her early kickstart in fashion.

Her artistic self was mainly influenced by her artistic background - an abstract-painter father and a stylish mother. Through frequent roadtrips along the then famous Route 66 had instilled the taste of traveling and free spirit within her. After completing her degree from the Youngstown University, she left Ohio and moved to New York's most venerated Institute of Fashion Technology where she received her degree in design. She eventually married her husband Robert Savage and in 1992, with $5000 loaned from her father and set up her first shop in a penthouse. The penthouse a.k.a. Nanette's first shop, was also the incubator for aspiring painters and poets who "would bounce ideas off one another while stargazing on the roof".

Today, her creations, which are suitable for a tea at The Ritz or a night out on the town that balances the feminine details with a seductive sensibility has gathered a number of fans among the fashion editirs, stylist and stars circuit. Apart from that, Lepore also extended her creativity into two fragrance lines - Nanette Lepore and Shanghai Butterfly. Good news. Nanette Lepore's current collection is available here and thanks to duo Shirenee and Rekha, the collection is available now at the all-fashionistas-must-go Maizen. For Spring/Summer 2006, my favorite pick from Lepore's wardrobe is the sexy Gingham dress. With a bow detail at bust and seamed gathered waist, it is a perfect outfit for the spring outing. The dress even has the touch of 60's Mod look. To complement your style, accessorize with Manolo Blahnik jeweled kidskin sandals from Shuz. For handbag, choose skeleton drawstring bag from Botkier, also available at Maizen.
