Harvey Nichols to open in Jakarta 2008

After playing host to the bigwigs of fashion and accessories such as Italian maestro Roberto Cavalli and jeweler Korloff, Jakarta is proud to add another international retailer into its portfolio.

Give a big welcome to UK’s high-end retailer Harvey Nichols. The urban yet luxurious department store will be making its first appearance in South East Asia in autumn of 2008, making it the second Harvey Nichols store after the first opened at The Landmark, Hong Kong.

According to Joseph Wan, the CEO of Harvey Nichols in an interview, Jakarta was chosen as the site of the next Harvey Nichols because not only it has potential, but the Indonesian capital and financial center too is lower in costs compared to other South East Asian cities and this will allow superior return for licensees.

The opening of Harvey Nichols in Jakarta is seen as a good move despite of its weak economic situation. With growing numbers of nouveau riche and elites who are into finer things in life, it seems that the British store launching will not only attract just rich and famous Indonesian socialites but also regional luxury shoppers as well.

The opening of the Indonesian store too means a second attempt made by the age-old luxury retailer into developing nations, after launching the first store in Istanbul, Turkey. Other store openings planned for 2008 are in Beirut while in September, smaller scale stores will be opened in Istanbul, Turkey and Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia.

At the meantime, while waiting for the Jakarta store to open, Asians who do not want to travel 12 hours to London can always visit the Hong Kong store at Landmark to taste everything British.
